Al-Bayān Logic as a Unifying Human Logic: A Qur’anic Architecture for Integrating Induction, Deduction, Science, Fiqh, and Civilizational Meaning

Abstract

This article presents Al-Bayān Logic [منطق البيان; bayān: (الرحمن: 4), (آل عمران: 138), (النحل: 44)] as a Qur’an-grounded architecture for unifying human knowledge without collapsing the difference between revelation, language, reason, empirical observation, juristic normativity, and civilizational practice. It develops the source presentation’s central thesis that Al-Bayān Logic is not a narrow extension of classical rhetoric, nor a merely literary account of Qur’anic composition, but a disciplined logic of meaning, relation, measure, judgment, consequence, reform, and construction. The argument proceeds in four movements. First, it distinguishes bayān as a Qur’anic system of clarification and differentiation from technical bayān in balāghah, while preserving the classical achievements of naẓm, dalālah, and uṣūl al-fiqh. Second, it defines the operating sequence of Al-Bayān Logic as a movement from expression to concept, from concept to network, from network to mīzān [الميزان; (الرحمن: 7-9), (الحديد: 25)], from mīzān to qisṭ [القسط; (النساء: 135), (المائدة: 8), (الحديد: 25)], from judgment to ma’āl [المآل/العاقبة; (الحشر: 18), (الأعراف: 128)], from ma’āl to iṣlāḥ [الإصلاح; (الأعراف: 56), (هود: 88)], and from iṣlāḥ to ʿumrān [العمران/الاستعمار في الأرض; (هود: 61)]. Fourth, it applies the framework to the fragmentation of modern knowledge and offers Al-Bayān Logic as a research program for Islamic studies, science, ethics, education, technology, and civilizational renewal. The article argues that Qur’anic ʿilm [العلم; (العلق: 1-5), (طه: 114)] is wider than experimental science, but it does not negate experimental science. Introduction: From Fragmented Knowledge to a Qur’anic Architecture of Meaning

Modern knowledge is marked by an extraordinary expansion of specialized methods and an equally serious weakening of integrative judgment. Empirical science has refined observation, experimentation, modeling, and technological intervention. Legal reasoning has refined textual interpretation, precedent, institutional procedure, and normative classification. Humanistic inquiry has refined historical consciousness, linguistic interpretation, and social critique. Yet these achievements often remain separated from one another. The result is not an absence of knowledge, but a crisis of ordered knowledge. Data multiply without wisdom. Norms are asserted without sufficient attention to empirical conditions. Technical capacity expands without adequate reflection on consequence. Religious reasoning may preserve meaning but become distant from institutional realities. Scientific reasoning may master measurement but become thin in moral and teleological orientation. This article proposes Al-Bayān Logic [منطق البيان; (الرحمن: 4); (آل عمران: 138)] as a Qur’an-grounded architecture for addressing this fragmentation. The foundational presentation from which this article is developed defines Al-Bayān Logic as a unifying human logic rooted in the Qur’anic system of meaning and manifested through the Prophetic vision of Madīnat al-ʿIlm, the City of Knowledge. It argues that this Prophetic city is not reducible to information, rhetoric, isolated science, or isolated jurisprudence. Rather, it represents a unified order in which revelation, language, reason, observation, measure, judgment, reform, and civilizational construction become mutually ordered. The present article redrafts that thesis into a more formal academic argument, adds methodological safeguards, and inserts Qur’anic concept brackets so that the reader can see the Arabic concept and its textual anchor at the point where the concept enters the argument. The central claim is precise: Al-Bayān Logic is a rule-governed method for moving from Qur’anic expression [لفظ/قول; (النحل: 44)] to concept [مفهوم بياني], from concept to network [شبكة مفهومية], from network to measure [ميزان; (الرحمن: 7-9)], from measure to judgment [حكم; (النساء: 58)], from judgment to consequence [مآل/عاقبة; (الحشر: 18)], from consequence to reform [إصلاح; (هود: 88)], and from reform to constructive inhabitation [عمران/استعمار; (هود: 61)]. This sequence does not replace induction, deduction, juristic reasoning, or empirical research. It gives each its place within a higher order of meaning. This claim requires careful qualification. Al-Bayān Logic is not an attempt to extract all scientific facts from the Qur’an. Nor is it a claim that empirical methods are unnecessary. Nor is it a reduction of fiqh to modern utility, or of science to scriptural citation. The Qur’an is not approached here as a textbook of technical disciplines, but as the source of governing meanings, measures, and evaluative pathways. Empirical inquiry remains empirical. Deduction remains deductive. Fiqh remains juristic. Yet the relation among these domains is not accidental. They can be coordinated under a Qur’anic architecture of bayān [بيان], niẓām [نظام], mīzān [ميزان], qisṭ [قسط], ma’āl [مآل], iṣlāḥ [إصلاح], and ʿumrān [عمران]. A useful way to state the research question is this: Can Al-Bayān Logic function as a Qur’an-grounded integrative logic that coordinates induction, deduction, empirical science, fiqh, and civilizational judgment without reducing one domain to another? The article answers affirmatively, but only if the theory is disciplined by textual evidence, linguistic analysis, conceptual mapping, methodological transparency, and accountability to consequences. Such a theory must avoid arbitrary symbolic association. It must also avoid turning Qur’anic concepts into decorative labels placed after conclusions reached elsewhere. The Qur’anic concept must govern the inquiry, not merely ornament it. (al-Attas, 1993; Hacking, 1983; Hallaq, 1997; Nasr, 1989)

The article proceeds as follows. It first distinguishes Al-Bayān Logic from classical bayān, balāghah, naẓm, and modern hermeneutics. It then situates Madīnat al-ʿIlm [مدينة العلم] as a symbolic and civilizational frame rather than a substitute for rigorous textual and methodological work. It next examines Sūrat al-Raḥmān and Sūrat al-ʿAlaq as paired foundations for source-order and research-order: Sūrat al-Raḥmān begins with divine mercy, Qur’anic teaching, human creation, and the teaching of bayān [الرحمن: 1-4], whereas Sūrat al-ʿAlaq begins the enacted movement of reading, creation, pen, and divine teaching [العلق: 1-5]. The article then defines the seven major movements of Al-Bayān Logic, supplies a Qur’anic concept matrix, explains how induction and deduction are integrated, and offers methodological safeguards. Classical Bayān, Naẓm, Uṣūl al-Fiqh, and the Need for a Wider Logic

The word bayān has a long and rich history in Arabic linguistic thought. In classical usage, bayān may signify clarification, disclosure, distinction, expression, or eloquence. In the technical sciences of balāghah, it became associated with modes of figurative indication, comparison, metaphor, and rhetorical clarity. The classical tradition produced subtle accounts of language, composition, and effect, especially in the theory of naẓm associated with ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī. Naẓm does not treat meaning as a mere collection of words. It examines the relational ordering through which words acquire force in composition. Al-Jurjānī’s project remains indispensable because it shows that meaning emerges through relation and arrangement rather than isolated vocabulary (al-Jurjānī, 2007; Larkin, 1995). (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

Yet Al-Bayān Logic [منطق البيان] is not identical with classical bayān [البيان البلاغي] or naẓm [النظم]. Classical naẓm explains the coherence of composition. Al-Bayān Logic studies the Qur’an as niẓām [نظام] in a wider sense: a dynamic architecture of meaning, relation, measure, judgment, consequence, reform, and construction. Naẓm asks how expressions cohere. Al-Bayān Logic asks how Qur’anic meanings govern movement from understanding to judgment, from judgment to action, and from action to consequence. It therefore includes linguistic coherence but does not stop there. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

Uṣūl al-fiqh provides another indispensable inheritance. It refined the analysis of command and prohibition, general and specific expressions, absolute and qualified terms, apparent meaning [ẓuhūr], implication, consensus, analogy in Sunnī traditions, reason in Imāmī traditions, and the conditions of valid inference. The juristic tradition understood that law requires disciplined movement from evidence to judgment, and that the interpreter is not free to impose arbitrary meaning upon the text (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992). Al-Bayān Logic does not abolish uṣūl al-fiqh. It asks what precedes and governs the juristic derivation of rulings: the construction of the Qur’anic concept itself. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

This distinction is crucial. Many contemporary disputes arise not because scholars lack rules for deriving rulings, but because they have not sufficiently clarified the governing concept. In bioethics, one must ask what life [حياة; (الملك: 2)], death [موت; (آل عمران: 185)], soul [نفس; (الزمر: 42)], preservation [حفظ], harm [ضرر/فساد; (الأعراف: 56)], and consequence [عاقبة; (الأعراف: 128)] mean within the Qur’anic network before moving to a ruling on a new medical case. In Islamic finance, one must clarify wealth [مال; (الحشر: 7)], circulation [دولة; (الحشر: 7)], justice [قسط; (الحديد: 25)], measure [ميزان; (الرحمن: 7-9)], and increase [ربا; (البقرة: 275)] before evaluating instruments that imitate lawful form while reproducing harmful concentration. (Chapra, 2000; Hallaq, 1997; Iqbal & Mirakhor, 2011; Kamali, 2008)

The limitation of a purely formal legal method is not that it is invalid, but that it may begin after the deepest conceptual question has already been decided implicitly. Al-Bayān Logic therefore adds a prior step: Qur’anic concept construction. This step asks what the Qur’an makes central, what it places in relation, what measure it establishes, what consequences it warns against, and what reform it commands. It is not anti-juristic. It is pre-juristic in the sense of concept formation and meta-juristic in the sense of governing the relation between concept, ruling, application, and consequence. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

Modern hermeneutics also helps clarify the need for Al-Bayān Logic, but it cannot replace it. Gadamer emphasized the historically effected character of understanding, and Ricoeur examined the surplus and world-disclosing capacity of texts (Gadamer, 2013; Ricoeur, 1976). These insights remind us that interpretation is not mechanical. Yet Al-Bayān Logic differs from general hermeneutics because it is not content with describing the event of understanding. It seeks a Qur’anic order of disciplined meaning. It asks how divine teaching [تعليم; (الرحمن: 2), (العلق: 4-5)] establishes a hierarchy of concepts, measures, and consequences that can govern human action. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

Nor is Al-Bayān Logic simply systems theory expressed in Islamic language. Systems theory can illuminate relation, feedback, complexity, and emergence. However, the Qur’anic concept of niẓām as used in this article is not merely structural interdependence. It is an order under divine teaching, moral accountability, balance, and judgment. The Qur’an does not only describe relations. It commands measure [ميزان], forbids transgression [طغيان; (الرحمن: 8)], requires justice [قسط], exposes corruption [فساد; (الروم: 41)], directs reform [إصلاح], and evaluates outcomes [مآل/عاقبة]. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

The need for a wider logic appears when linguistic, juristic, empirical, and civilizational questions converge. A modern problem such as artificial intelligence, medical end-of-life treatment, ecological destruction, or financial concentration cannot be answered by linguistic analysis alone, nor by empirical data alone, nor by legal form alone. It requires a disciplined pathway that begins with meaning, passes through evidence and measure, reaches judgment, tests consequence, and directs reform. That pathway is what this article calls Al-Bayān Logic [منطق البيان]. (Chapra, 2000; Hallaq, 1997; Iqbal & Mirakhor, 2011; Kamali, 2008)

Madīnat al-ʿIlm as a Civilizational Frame

The foundational presentation uses the Prophetic image of Madīnat al-ʿIlm [مدينة العلم] as a symbolic and civilizational frame for Al-Bayān Logic. The report “I am the city of knowledge” has a long reception history in Muslim intellectual memory, especially in relation to the Prophetic source of ʿilm and the role of transmitted wisdom in forming a knowledge community. Because hadith criticism has treated reports of this wording with different evaluations across schools and transmitters, a scholarly article should employ the image with caution. Its argument should not depend on an unexamined isnād claim. Rather, it can treat Madīnat al-ʿIlm as a received civilizational symbol that expresses a wider and well-grounded Qur’anic truth: the Prophetic mission is a mission of recitation, teaching, purification, and wisdom [تلاوة، تعليم، تزكية، حكمة; (البقرة: 129), (آل عمران: 164), (الجمعة: 2)]. (Brown, 2009; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.; al-Attas, 1993; Nasr, 1989)

This distinction strengthens the argument. The Qur’an itself presents the Messenger as one who recites the signs, purifies, teaches the Book, and teaches wisdom. These functions are not reducible to information delivery. Recitation [تلاوة] orders attention to revealed signs. Teaching [تعليم] forms understanding. Purification [تزكية] reforms the receiving self. Wisdom [حكمة] joins knowledge to right judgment. Thus, the Prophetic city of knowledge is not an archive of data. It is a formation of human beings capable of receiving, ordering, judging, and acting according to divine guidance. (Brown, 2009; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.; al-Attas, 1993; Nasr, 1989)

In this frame, Madīnat al-ʿIlm is not a metaphor for elitist possession of knowledge. It is a symbol of ordered access. A city has gates, paths, measures, institutions, public responsibility, and direction. Knowledge likewise requires entry, discipline, hierarchy, transmission, verification, application, and accountability. Al-Bayān Logic reads the Prophetic knowledge city as an integrated order in which Qur’anic meaning [معنى قرآني], language [لسان; (إبراهيم: 4)], reason [عقل; (البقرة: 242)], observation [نظر; (الغاشية: 17-20)], measure [ميزان], judgment [حكم], and reform [إصلاح] are not separated into hostile domains. (Brown, 2009; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.; al-Attas, 1993; Nasr, 1989)

This civilizational frame also protects against a reduction of Islam to devotional sentiment or legal minimalism. The Prophetic mission includes devotion, but it is not exhausted by inward illumination. It includes law, but it is not exhausted by isolated rulings. It includes knowledge, but knowledge in the Qur’an is never merely accumulation. The Qur’an repeatedly connects ʿilm [علم] with fear of God [خشية; (فاطر: 28)], justice [قسط; (النساء: 135)], responsibility [مسؤولية; (الإسراء: 36)], and consequence [عاقبة]. A city of knowledge must therefore be a city of measure and accountability. (Brown, 2009; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.; al-Attas, 1993; Nasr, 1989)

The value of the Madīnat al-ʿIlm frame lies in its capacity to hold together what modern specialization separates. A scientific laboratory, a court of law, a school, a hospital, a market, and a mosque all produce or apply knowledge. Yet when each operates by an isolated logic, social fragmentation follows. A Qur’anic civilization requires pathways between them. The laboratory supplies observation and measurement. Fiqh supplies normative classification. Ethics supplies evaluation of harm and benefit. Governance supplies institutional implementation. Bayān supplies the meaning-order that prevents these domains from becoming mutually blind. (Brown, 2009; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.; al-Attas, 1993; Nasr, 1989)

Therefore, the article uses Madīnat al-ʿIlm not as an isolated proof-text, but as a civilizational image grounded in Qur’anic functions of Prophethood. It names the aspiration of Al-Bayān Logic: to move from revealed teaching to ordered knowledge, from ordered knowledge to measured judgment, and from measured judgment to reforming construction. This is the Prophetic city as a living architecture of ʿilm [علم; (العلق: 1-5), (طه: 114)]. (Brown, 2009; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.; al-Attas, 1993; Nasr, 1989)

Qur’anic Foundations: Sūrat al-Raḥmān and Sūrat al-ʿAlaq

The foundation of Al-Bayān Logic is not a philosophical abstraction but a Qur’anic ordering of source and operation. Sūrat al-Raḥmān opens with a sequence of extraordinary density: al-Raḥmān [الرحمن], He taught the Qur’an [علّم القرآن], He created the human being [خلق الإنسان], and He taught him bayān [علّمه البيان] (الرحمن: 1-4). The order matters. The human being does not begin as an autonomous rational subject who later acquires revelation as an optional supplement. The order begins with divine mercy, then Qur’anic teaching, then human creation, then the teaching of bayān. Meaning is therefore rooted in mercy and teaching before it is enacted by the human subject. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Izutsu, 2002; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.)

This sequence does not deny human agency. Rather, it locates agency within received teaching. The human being is capable of bayān, but bayān is taught. The human being speaks, distinguishes, explains, reasons, and judges, but the power of clarification is not self-originating. It is bestowed, ordered, and accountable. In Al-Bayān Logic, this establishes a source-order [ترتيب المصدر]: al-Raḥmān [الرحمن] is the source of mercy and teaching; the Qur’an [القرآن] is the revealed source of governing meaning; the human being [الإنسان] is the created recipient and actor; bayān [البيان] is the taught capacity through which meaning becomes manifest, distinguished, communicated, and operational. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Izutsu, 2002; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.)

Immediately after this opening, Sūrat al-Raḥmān moves to cosmic order: the sun and moon operate by calculation [حسبان; (الرحمن: 5)], the stars and trees prostrate [سجود; (الرحمن: 6)], the heaven is raised, and the mīzān is placed [وضع الميزان; (الرحمن: 7)]. The sūrah then commands that human beings not transgress the measure [ألا تطغوا في الميزان; (الرحمن: 8)] and that they establish weight with justice and not diminish the measure [وأقيموا الوزن بالقسط ولا تخسروا الميزان; (الرحمن: 9)]. The source-order of mercy, Qur’an, human creation, and bayān is therefore immediately connected to measure, anti-transgression, justice, and prevention of loss. This is the first major proof that bayān is not merely speech. If bayān were only expression, the movement from bayān to mīzān would be accidental. But in Sūrat al-Raḥmān, teaching bayān belongs to a wider architecture in which cosmic order and human justice are joined. Human bayān must be measured. It must not become verbal power detached from balance. It must not become legal or scientific technique detached from justice. The sūrah makes mīzān [ميزان] the criterion by which bayān becomes ethically and civilizationally ordered. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Izutsu, 2002; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.)

Sūrat al-ʿAlaq supplies the operational beginning of inquiry. It begins with the command to read [اقرأ] in the name of the Lord who created [باسم ربك الذي خلق; (العلق: 1)]. It then recalls the creation of the human being from a clinging substance [علق; (العلق: 2)], repeats the command to read, names the Lord as most generous [الأكرم; (العلق: 3)], identifies teaching by the pen [علّم بالقلم; (العلق: 4)], and declares that God taught the human being what he did not know [علّم الإنسان ما لم يعلم; (العلق: 5)]. Here the beginning of research is not autonomous curiosity but reading in the name of the Creator. The pen is honored, but the pen remains under divine teaching. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Izutsu, 2002; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.)

Sūrat al-ʿAlaq also warns against knowledge detached from dependence. After the opening verses, the sūrah states that the human being transgresses [يطغى] when he sees himself as self-sufficient [استغنى; (العلق: 6-7)]. This warning is decisive for epistemology. The danger is not knowledge as such, but knowledge accompanied by perceived independence. Scientific knowledge can become transgressive when it forgets dependence, measure, accountability, and return. Juristic knowledge can also become transgressive when it becomes formal power detached from mercy, justice, and consequence. Al-Bayān Logic therefore integrates the opening command to read with the warning against epistemic arrogance. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Izutsu, 2002; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.)

Together, Sūrat al-Raḥmān and Sūrat al-ʿAlaq establish two axes. The first is source-order: mercy, Qur’an, human creation, bayān, cosmic calculation, mīzān, qisṭ, and prevention of loss. The second is research-order: reading, creation, pen, learning, dependence, and warning against transgression. Al-Bayān Logic arises where these axes meet. It begins from divine teaching, employs human reading and writing, measures claims, prevents transgression, and directs knowledge toward reform. The implication for modern knowledge is profound. Experimental science is a form of ʿilm insofar as it observes, tests, measures, and learns. But Qur’anic ʿilm [العلم] is wider than experimental science. It includes revelation, moral measure, accountability, wisdom, reform, and civilizational construction. Conversely, Qur’anic ʿilm does not excuse the neglect of empirical evidence. The command to look, travel, consider, and reflect [نظر/سير/تفكر; (الغاشية: 17-20), (العنكبوت: 20), (آل عمران: 190-191)] requires disciplined attention to the created order. Thus, Al-Bayān Logic refuses both scientism and anti-scientific scripturalism. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Izutsu, 2002; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.)

Definition and Operating Sequence of Al-Bayān Logic

Al-Bayān Logic may now be defined more formally. It is a Qur’an-grounded logic of meaning and judgment that governs the movement from expression to concept, from concept to network, from network to measure, from measure to ruling or evaluation, from evaluation to consequence, from consequence to reform, and from reform to constructive inhabitation. Its central sequence may be represented as follows: bayān [البيان; (الرحمن: 4)] → niẓām [النظام/الترتيب; (الفرقان: 2) as measure and proportion] → mīzān [الميزان; (الرحمن: 7-9)] → qisṭ [القسط; (الحديد: 25)] → ma’āl [المآل/العاقبة; (الحشر: 18)] → iṣlāḥ [الإصلاح; (هود: 88)] → ʿumrān [العمران/استعمار الأرض; (هود: 61)]. The first movement is from expression to concept. A Qur’anic word is not isolated. It appears in grammatical form, rhetorical position, thematic context, and intertextual relation. To study bayān is to ask how the Qur’an clarifies and differentiates meaning. For example, mīzān [ميزان] is not merely a physical scale. In Sūrat al-Raḥmān, it is placed after cosmic order and before commands against transgression and loss. In Sūrat al-Ḥadīd, the Book and the mīzān are sent so that people may stand by qisṭ [ليقوم الناس بالقسط; (الحديد: 25)]. The concept therefore carries a function: it measures, prevents excess, and enables justice. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Izutsu, 2002; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.)

The second movement is from concept to network. No governing concept stands alone. Bayān connects to Qur’an, teaching, human creation, measure, justice, and accountability. Qisṭ connects to testimony, enmity, impartiality, and social standing [النساء: 135; المائدة: 8]. Iṣlāḥ connects to corruption [فساد], covenant, social order, and prophetic mission [الأعراف: 56; هود: 88]. A concept becomes governing only when its network is known. Without network analysis, the interpreter may select one verse and ignore the conceptual order that gives it measure. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Izutsu, 2002; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.)

The third movement is from network to mīzān. The network does not merely produce themes. It produces evaluative measures. The measure may be justice, prevention of harm, preservation of trust, prevention of transgression, proportionality, or consequence. The mīzān is not a metaphor for balance in a vague sense. It is a criterion that prevents the loss, exaggeration, reduction, or distortion of meaning and action. The Qur’anic command not to diminish the mīzān [ولا تخسروا الميزان; (الرحمن: 9)] applies to commercial measurement, but it also supplies a wider logic: do not reduce the measure by which truth and justice are established. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Auda, 2008; Hallaq, 1997; Izutsu, 2002)

The fourth movement is from mīzān to judgment. Judgment [حكم] in the Qur’an is not arbitrary command. It is tied to trust [أمانة], justice [عدل], and divine guidance [النساء: 58]. A judgment that lacks measure is mere preference. A judgment that ignores consequence is incomplete. A judgment that contradicts the concept network is unstable. In fiqh, this means that legal classification must be preceded by concept formation and followed by application analysis. In science, it means that empirical conclusions must be interpreted within the proper limits of method and consequence. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Auda, 2008; Hallaq, 1997; Izutsu, 2002)

The fifth movement is from judgment to ma’āl. Ma’āl [مآل] refers to the outcome, return, consequence, or end toward which an action moves. The Qur’an repeatedly orders human beings to consider what they send forward for tomorrow [ولتنظر نفس ما قدمت لغد; (الحشر: 18)] and to observe the end of earlier communities [فانظروا كيف كان عاقبة; repeated in several verses]. Al-Bayān Logic therefore refuses judgments that are formally correct but consequentially destructive. This does not mean that consequences alone create law. It means that consequence is part of the Qur’anic pathway of judgment. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Auda, 2008; Hallaq, 1997; Izutsu, 2002)

The sixth movement is from ma’āl to iṣlāḥ. When consequences disclose disorder, corruption, harm, imbalance, or injustice, the proper response is reform [إصلاح]. The Qur’an forbids corruption after reform [ولا تفسدوا في الأرض بعد إصلاحها; (الأعراف: 56)] and places prophetic speech under the sign of seeking reform as far as possible [إن أريد إلا الإصلاح ما استطعت; (هود: 88)]. Reform is not mere activism. It is correction according to measure. It repairs what has deviated from the Qur’anic order of justice, trust, balance, and mercy. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Auda, 2008; Hallaq, 1997; Izutsu, 2002)

The seventh movement is from iṣlāḥ to ʿumrān. Human beings are placed upon the earth not merely to consume, compete, or dominate, but to inhabit responsibly. The Qur’anic statement that God produced human beings from the earth and sought them to cultivate it [استعمركم فيها; (هود: 61)] provides a key foundation for constructive civilization. ʿUmrān in Al-Bayān Logic is not identical with modern development. It is constructive inhabitation under bayān, mīzān, qisṭ, ma’āl, and iṣlāḥ. Development without mīzān can become corruption. Technology without ma’āl can become harm. Law without iṣlāḥ can become rigidity. Knowledge without ʿumrān can become sterile. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Auda, 2008; Hallaq, 1997; Izutsu, 2002)

This operating sequence clarifies why the term logic is appropriate. Al-Bayān Logic is not merely a set of values. It is a structured pathway with rules of movement, evidence, testing, correction, and application. It asks: What is the expression? What concept does it establish? What network surrounds it? What measure governs it? What judgment follows? What consequence arises? What reform is required? What constructive order should result? A method that answers these questions in sequence can claim to be a logic of meaning and action. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Auda, 2008; Hallaq, 1997; Izutsu, 2002)

The matrix illustrates why Al-Bayān Logic cannot be reduced to one concept. Bayān begins clarification, but mīzān prevents clarification from becoming uncontrolled assertion. Qisṭ directs measure toward justice. Ma’āl prevents judgments from ignoring consequences. Iṣlāḥ turns diagnosis into correction. ʿUmrān directs corrected knowledge toward constructive inhabitation. The power of the method lies in the ordered relation among these concepts, not in any single term taken in isolation. (Abdel Haleem, 2005; Izutsu, 2002; Ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿĀmilī, n.d.)

Induction, Deduction, and the Reordering of Scientific Inquiry

One of the central aims of Al-Bayān Logic is to integrate induction and deduction without confusing them. Induction moves from observed instances toward generalization. Deduction moves from premises to conclusions. Abduction, in the Peircean sense, proposes explanatory hypotheses that require testing. Modern science employs all three, although public descriptions of science often overemphasize induction alone. Philosophy of science has shown that observation is theory-laden, that hypotheses operate within paradigms or research programs, and that falsification, explanation, modeling, and measurement all require methodological judgment (Hacking, 1983; Kuhn, 1970; Lakatos, 1978; Peirce, 1931-1958; Popper, 1959). (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Peirce, 1931-1958; Weiss, 1992)

Al-Bayān Logic accepts these insights but reorders their significance. Empirical inquiry [نظر/سير/اعتبار; (الغاشية: 17-20), (العنكبوت: 20)] is necessary because the created order is not imaginary. The Qur’an calls human beings to look at the camel, the sky, the mountains, and the earth; to travel through the land; and to reflect on creation. This is not a rejection of observation. It is an invitation to disciplined seeing. Yet observation is not ultimate. It must be read [اقرأ; (العلق: 1)] in the name of the Creator and placed under mīzān [ميزان] and accountability. (Daston & Galison, 2007; Hacking, 1983; Kuhn, 1970; Lakatos, 1978; Popper, 1959)

The problem with scientism is not that it values science, but that it turns a powerful method into a total worldview. Experimental science can tell us how a system behaves under specified conditions. It can model disease, predict material effects, calculate risk, and optimize processes. But it cannot by itself determine the ultimate meaning of life, the moral status of human dignity, the justice of social distribution, or the civilizational purpose of knowledge. These questions require bayān [بيان], mīzān [ميزان], qisṭ [قسط], and ma’āl [مآل]. (Daston & Galison, 2007; Hacking, 1983; Kuhn, 1970; Lakatos, 1978; Popper, 1959)

At the same time, Al-Bayān Logic rejects anti-scientific piety. A claim is not made true by religious language. If a medical, economic, ecological, or technological judgment concerns empirical conditions, then empirical inquiry is required. The Qur’anic command to establish weight with justice [أقيموا الوزن بالقسط; (الرحمن: 9)] implies accuracy in measurement. False data corrupt the mīzān. Weak evidence can produce unjust judgment. A juristic ruling applied to a misdescribed reality may become harmful, even if the legal principle is sound. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Peirce, 1931-1958; Weiss, 1992)

Al-Bayān Logic therefore assigns empirical science a vital but bounded role. It supplies disciplined observation, measurement, and causal analysis. It helps identify real conditions, probabilities, risks, and effects. It clarifies the subject matter to which normative reasoning will be applied. But it does not possess the authority to define the whole meaning of the human being or the final measure of justice. Its findings enter the bayān pathway as evidence within a larger architecture. (Daston & Galison, 2007; Hacking, 1983; Kuhn, 1970; Lakatos, 1978; Popper, 1959)

Deduction also has a vital but bounded role. Legal and theological reasoning require premises, definitions, and valid inference. Without deduction, interpretation becomes impressionistic. Yet deduction can become sterile when its premises are too narrow or when it ignores empirical reality. A syllogism may be formally valid but materially inadequate. A juristic analogy may preserve external form while missing the governing mīzān. A legal classification may be textually plausible but socially destructive when applied without attention to ma’āl. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Peirce, 1931-1958; Weiss, 1992)

The integration of induction and deduction occurs through the concept of mīzān. The mīzān requires accurate observation, valid inference, proportional application, and accountability to outcome. It is not merely a compromise between science and fiqh. It is the Qur’anic measure that gives each method its place. Induction identifies patterns in creation. Deduction applies valid principles. Bayān clarifies meaning. Qisṭ directs justice. Ma’āl examines consequence. Iṣlāḥ corrects disorder. ʿUmrān builds responsibly. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Peirce, 1931-1958; Weiss, 1992)

This framework can transform research design. A Bayān-based research project would not begin only with a technical problem. It would first identify the governing Qur’anic concept [المفهوم الحاكم], then define the empirical question, then distinguish descriptive evidence from normative judgment, then identify the mīzān of evaluation, then consider consequences, then propose reform. Such a project is neither secularized science with religious decoration nor premodern reasoning hostile to evidence. It is an ordered movement of ʿilm [علم] under Qur’anic measure. (Daston & Galison, 2007; Hacking, 1983; Kuhn, 1970; Lakatos, 1978; Popper, 1959)

Fiqh, Uṣūl, and the Prior Work of Qur’anic Concept Construction

Fiqh is often described as the disciplined understanding of practical rulings from detailed evidences. Uṣūl al-fiqh supplies the methods by which such rulings are derived. This heritage is indispensable. However, many contemporary problems reveal a gap between legal derivation and concept formation. The jurist may ask whether a new case falls under an existing ruling, but the deeper question may be whether the governing concept has been properly identified. Al-Bayān Logic addresses this prior work. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

Consider the difference between a sign and a reality. In medical ethics, heartbeat, respiration, brain activity, and cellular processes may function as signs. But the governing Qur’anic question concerns life [حياة], death [موت], soul [نفس], trust [أمانة], harm [ضرر/فساد], and consequence [مآل]. The Qur’an states that every soul shall taste death [كل نفس ذائقة الموت; (آل عمران: 185)] and that God takes souls at the time of death and those that have not died during sleep [الله يتوفى الأنفس حين موتها; (الزمر: 42)]. A fiqh ruling on new medical criteria must therefore distinguish between the metaphysical reality named in revelation and the empirical signs used by physicians. This distinction cannot be supplied by medical science alone or by legal form alone. It requires bayān. (Beauchamp & Childress, 2019; Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008)

In financial ethics, the same issue appears. A contract may satisfy formal requirements and still participate in an economic pattern that concentrates wealth, obscures risk, or reproduces injustice. The Qur’an’s concern that wealth not become a circulation among the rich alone [كي لا يكون دولة بين الأغنياء منكم; (الحشر: 7)] and its severe treatment of ribā [الربا; (البقرة: 275-279)] cannot be reduced to isolated contract form. The governing concepts include wealth [مال], circulation [دولة], measure [ميزان], justice [قسط], trust [أمانة], and harm [فساد]. Fiqh remains necessary, but Al-Bayān Logic asks whether the legal analysis has preserved the Qur’anic mīzān. (Chapra, 2000; Hallaq, 1997; Iqbal & Mirakhor, 2011; Kamali, 2008)

This does not mean that Al-Bayān Logic replaces madhhab reasoning or dismisses inherited authority. Rather, it offers a disciplined layer of analysis that can be used across schools. Sunnī and Imāmī uṣūl differ on certain sources and procedures, including the scope of qiyās, the role of reason, and the treatment of reports. Yet both require conceptual clarity, textual discipline, and responsible application. Al-Bayān Logic can serve as a pre-derivative and post-derivative discipline: pre-derivative because it clarifies the concept before ruling, and post-derivative because it tests the application through mīzān, ma’āl, and iṣlāḥ. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

The relation to maqāṣid al-sharīʿah deserves special attention. Maqāṣid theory seeks the purposes or higher objectives of the law, classically including preservation of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property, with later expansions to dignity, justice, freedom, and social welfare (al-Shāṭibī, 1997; Kamali, 2008). Al-Bayān Logic overlaps with maqāṣid because both resist narrow literalism and seek higher order. But they are not identical. Maqāṣid often begins from the purposes of law; Al-Bayān Logic begins from Qur’anic concept networks and their measures. Maqāṣid asks what the law aims to preserve. Al-Bayān Logic asks how the Qur’an builds meaning, measure, judgment, consequence, reform, and construction. (al-Shāṭibī, 1997; Auda, 2008; Kamali, 2008)

The two methods can cooperate. Maqāṣid can help identify the normative aims of rulings, while Al-Bayān Logic can deepen the Qur’anic concept architecture from which those aims are understood. For example, preservation of life is strengthened by a Bayān analysis of life [حياة], soul [نفس], mercy [رحمة], trial [ابتلاء], death [موت], and trust [أمانة]. Preservation of wealth is strengthened by a Bayān analysis of wealth [مال], provision [رزق], circulation [دولة], measure [ميزان], justice [قسط], and prohibition of devouring wealth unjustly [أكل المال بالباطل; (البقرة: 188)]. (al-Shāṭibī, 1997; Auda, 2008; Kamali, 2008)

A Bayān-based fiqh method would therefore proceed through stages. First, it identifies the governing Qur’anic concept and its network. Second, it distinguishes essence from sign, principle from application, and ruling from condition. Third, it consults inherited juristic methods and authorities. Fourth, it incorporates empirical evidence where the subject matter requires it. Fifth, it evaluates application through ma’āl. Sixth, it directs correction through iṣlāḥ. This sequence strengthens fiqh by preventing the collapse of concept, sign, rule, and outcome. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

The greatest danger in contemporary fiqh is not only rigidity or laxity. It is conceptual confusion. A ruling may be strict but conceptually shallow, or flexible but conceptually unmoored. Al-Bayān Logic seeks a third path: disciplined flexibility under Qur’anic measure. It allows new realities to be studied without surrendering the authority of revelation, and it allows revelation to govern without ignoring the realities to which judgment is applied. (Hallaq, 1997; Kamali, 2008; Weiss, 1992)

Methodological Protocol and Safeguards

For Al-Bayān Logic to become a serious academic method, it must be reproducible. It cannot rely on intuition alone. The following protocol offers a disciplined procedure. Step one is textual collection. The researcher gathers all relevant Qur’anic occurrences of the root, term, related forms, and close conceptual neighbors. For bayān [بيان], this includes explicit forms of b-y-n and verses of clarification, distinction, evidence, and manifestation, such as (الرحمن: 4), (آل عمران: 138), and (النحل: 44). For mīzān [ميزان], it includes (الرحمن: 7-9), (الحديد: 25), and verses of weight, measure, and loss. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Step two is linguistic analysis. The researcher examines root meaning, morphology, syntactic placement, semantic field, opposition, and collocation. This does not mean reducing Qur’anic meaning to dictionary meaning. Lexical analysis is a starting point, not the final authority. Qur’anic usage governs the concept. Classical lexicons, tafsīr, and balāghah assist the analysis, but the Qur’anic network remains primary. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Step three is network mapping. The researcher identifies what concepts appear with, before, after, or against the target concept. Bayān connects to teaching, Qur’an, human creation, signs, and clarification. Mīzān connects to cosmic order, anti-transgression, weight, justice, and prevention of loss. Qisṭ connects to testimony, impartiality, Book, mīzān, and social standing. Iṣlāḥ connects to corruption, prophetic mission, covenant, and social repair. Network mapping prevents selective citation. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Step four is measure extraction. The researcher asks what mīzān the network establishes. Is the governing measure justice, proportionality, truthfulness, preservation, circulation, trust, mercy, prevention of harm, or return to God? This step is essential because concepts can be admired without becoming operative. A Qur’anic concept becomes operative when it yields a measure of judgment. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Step five is domain translation. The researcher identifies the modern domain to which the concept will be applied: science, law, education, medicine, economics, technology, governance, or social research. At this stage, the researcher must distinguish descriptive claims from normative claims. Empirical evidence describes what is occurring. Qur’anic mīzān evaluates what ought to be established, prevented, corrected, or constructed. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Step six is evidentiary integration. The researcher gathers empirical evidence, juristic evidence, historical evidence, and institutional evidence according to the domain. Al-Bayān Logic does not allow weak evidence to hide under pious language. It also does not allow powerful data to escape moral measure. Evidence is classified by type, strength, and relevance. The descriptive and normative levels remain distinct but coordinated. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Step seven is judgment. The researcher formulates a judgment or evaluation that explicitly states its concept, evidence, measure, and limits. A Bayān judgment should not merely announce a conclusion. It should show the path: expression, concept, network, mīzān, evidence, ruling, consequence, reform. This transparency allows critique and correction. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Step eight is ma’āl analysis. The researcher asks what consequences the judgment is likely to produce. This includes intended and unintended outcomes, distribution of benefit and harm, institutional feasibility, public trust, long-term effects, and spiritual or moral deformation. Ma’āl does not replace revelation, but revelation commands attention to consequence [الحشر: 18; الأعراف: 128]. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Step nine is iṣlāḥ design. If the judgment identifies disorder, the researcher proposes correction. Iṣlāḥ must be measured and proportionate. It must avoid producing a greater corruption while correcting a lesser one. It must be connected to ʿumrān, not merely critique. Reform is complete only when it opens a constructive pathway. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Step ten is review and falsifiability in the broad sense. A Bayān analysis should be open to correction if it misreads a verse, ignores a relevant concept, uses weak evidence, misclassifies a domain, or produces harmful consequences. This is not Popperian falsifiability in a narrow scientific sense, but a broader discipline of accountability. The method must be correctable by text, language, reason, evidence, and consequence. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Several safeguards follow. First, no concept should be declared governing on the basis of one isolated verse when the Qur’anic network is broader. Second, Arabic terms should not be translated prematurely into foreign conceptual categories. Bayān is not merely rhetoric, mīzān is not merely balance, qisṭ is not merely equality, and ʿumrān is not merely development. Third, empirical claims must be supported by empirical evidence. Fourth, legal claims must respect the relevant juristic tradition. Fifth, civilizational claims must be tested against ma’āl and iṣlāḥ. Sixth, the method must distinguish between Qur’anic governance and human application, since the former is authoritative while the latter remains corrigible. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

These safeguards prevent three distortions. The first is decorative Islamization, in which Qur’anic terms are placed over modern theories without transforming their measures. The second is arbitrary symbolism, in which any verse is connected to any topic through subjective association. The third is methodological imperialism, in which one domain, whether science, fiqh, philosophy, or politics, claims total authority over all others. Al-Bayān Logic resists each distortion by maintaining ordered relation. (Hacking, 1983; Izutsu, 2002; Lakatos, 1978; Weiss, 1992)

Applied Case Study: Artificial Intelligence, Data, and Qur’anic Measure

A brief case study can show how Al-Bayān Logic operates. Artificial intelligence is often discussed through technical categories: data, models, prediction, automation, bias, safety, and efficiency. These categories are necessary but insufficient. The first Bayān question is not whether AI is good or bad. It is what kind of knowledge claim the system makes. Only then does it ask what contracts, institutions, and markets can serve that order. This does not eliminate technical finance, but it subjects technical finance to Qur’anic measure. Sūrat al-Raḥmān and Sūrat al-ʿAlaq together provide the foundations of a curriculum: mercy, Qur’an, human creation, language, measure, reading, pen, learning, and humility before God. In social research, Al-Bayān Logic can help distinguish statistical visibility from human meaning. A survey may measure behavior, but bayān asks what the behavior signifies within networks of family, trust, dignity, harm, and reform. Each study should state its Qur’anic concept bracket clearly, identify the verses that govern the inquiry, distinguish text from application, and show how the judgment was reached.
